The White House has criticised a Republican-led bill, H.R. 7980, which it alleges would lead to higher taxes and undermine efforts to combat global warming. However, the Biden administration has decided not to veto the bill, indicating it could support moderate Democrats in tough reelection fights. The bill would block incentives for electric vehicles that contain battery materials from a “prohibited foreign entity” that were extracted, processed, recycled, manufactured or assembled in a prohibited foreign entity. Most Democrats view the legislation as an attack on efforts to transition away from vehicles powered by combustion fuel engines, a major source of pollution contributing to the climate crisis.
