Wealthy Homeowners Reap Billions in Energy Tax Credits, Leaving Low-Income Families with Just $32 Million

Wealthy homeowners are receiving billions in tax credits for making their residences more energy efficient, according to an analysis by POLITICO’s E&E News. The program was expanded under President Joe Biden and is designed to encourage homeowners to buy solar panels, insulation materials, and other items that can reduce energy bills and emissions. However, households with income below $25,000 received only $32 million in these credits. The disparity raises concerns that the credits are being given taxpayer money to hundreds of thousands of people who do not need financial assistance to purchase equipment that saves significant money on energy bills. The Treasury Department insists that the tax credits are largely benefiting the middle class and are funding the additional inflation Reduction Act.
