The US government is increasing efforts to reduce emissions of methane, hydrofluorocarbons and other particularly potent greenhouse gases, a term called “super pollutants.” The move comes in an announcement tied to a “super pollut summit” and is part of a series of steps aimed at reducing emissions of these compounds, which trap heat more effectively than carbon dioxide. The White House argues that reducing emissions is the fastest way to tackle climate change and a critical complement to reducing atmospheric CO2 levels. This comes on top of other initiatives aimed at these pollutants in recent years, including the 2020 American Innovation and Manufacturing Act and EPA regulations aimed at cutting methane output from the oil and gas industry.
