US developers are using water electrolysis, a method of producing green H2 using renewable energy, to reduce reliance on fossil fuel in the production of hydrogen. This strategy is being used by developers across the US to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Water electrolysis can potentially expand US capacity from 116 megawatts (MW) to 4,524 MW, potentially increasing US capacity to around 0.72 million metric tons per year, compared to the current annual H2 production using fossil fuel. Projects based on electrolyzers with a low-carbon intensity bar could receive tax credits if construction begins by 2033. However, fossil fuel remains the most common source of energy behind the production, with fossil fuel still the primary energy source.
