Allies of the fossil fuel industry and former President Donald Trump’s judicial adviser are urging the Supreme Court to side with them in a legal dispute that could potentially cost oil and gas companies billions of dollars. The court is set to consider a petition by the oil industry to dismiss dozens of lawsuits filed by U.S. cities, states, and counties seeking to hold Exxon Mobil, Chevron and other companies accountable for lying about the dangers of burning fossil fuels. Critics, including those with ties to judicial activist Leonard Leo, have urged the high court to intervene, arguing that it would prevent an assault on federalism. The Center for Climate Integrity also criticizes the industry’s efforts to influence the court on behalf of Big Oil. In addition, Republican attorneys general in 19 states have launched a bid to kill lawsuits by some of their Democratic counterparts.
