Sen. John Barrasso, a Wyoming Republican, has proposed legislation to extend special use permits for housing on Forest Service land to up to 100 years in Western states, from 30 years in current law. The proposal aims to help alleviate a housing shortage affecting Forest Service staffing in the West. Barrasso is the top Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. He stated that the shortage of housing options is limiting the agency’s ability to recruit and retain a quality workforce capable of managing national forests.
