Arizona utility SRP has added 340 MW/1,360 MWh of battery storage capacity to the state’s energy grid with the completion of two new facilities, the Sierra Estrella energy storage facility, and Superstition, the largest standalone battery in Arizona. The new capacity will power 76,000 homes for four hours and will help store excess energy during low demand periods for use during peak demand. The facilities will be operated by US battery storage specialist Plus Power using lithium-ion battery energy storage systems made by Tesla. SRP plans to have nearly 1,300 MW of battery and pumped hydro storage capacity, with over 1,100 MW of additional battery storage resources expected to be online by the end of the year.
