California utility SCE is seeking regulatory approval for 750MW of energy storage resource adequacy contracts. The contracts were selected as part of SCE’s Midterm Reliability RFO (MTRRFO), which will be released in October 2022 and February 2023. The larger of the contracts covers 500MW of nameplate battery storage capacity from AES Corporation’s Bellefield solar and storage facility in Kern County, California. The lithium-ion based BESS will be co-located with a 500MW solar farm and will be supplied for a period of 15 years. SCE also plans to amend an existing 100MW RA agreement from the Bellefield project, which was approved by CPUC in May 2022. The second RA agreement covers 250MW from Rev Renewables’ Commerce Energy Storage facility in Los Angeles County.
