Sen. Joe Manchin Leaves Democratic Party, Registers as Independent While Staying in Senate Democratic Caucus.

West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin has left the Democratic Party and registered as an independent, marking his long-standing feud with the party. Despite this, he plans to remain in the Senate Democratic Caucus and continue his positions as chair of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and a member of Democratic leadership. This comes after Manchin clashed with President Joe Biden over issues such as implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act, Democrats’ landmark climate law, and joined Republicans on numerous votes opposing the Biden administration’s energy and climate actions. The switch to independent could potentially impact Manchin’s political future. He has until August 1 to file for either Senate or governor as independents, but has not ruled out a run.
