The 19 Republican state attorneys general have asked the Supreme Court to quash climate lawsuits against the oil and gas industry, arguing that these lawsuits could put fossil fuel producers on the hook for billions of dollars. The move comes as part of a new strategy to combat climate lawsuits, which aim to hold the oil industry accountable for climate impacts. The case involves Alabama, other red states, and five Democratic-led states that have sued oil companies for paying for rising tides, intensifying storms and other disasters worsened by climate change. A Supreme Court review of the case is not guaranteed, as the states’ motion for leave to file a bill of complaint requires a judge to grant the states’ request for leave.
