Loon Lake is a hydraulic turbine power generation facility located in South Lake Tahoe, California, within the jurisdiction of the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC). The plant operates with a capacity of 74.1 megawatts and is managed by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), which serves as both the plant operator and majority owner. Loon Lake is classified as a regulated facility and is part of the Balancing Authority of Northern California. Utilizing water as its primary fuel source, the plant contributes to the region’s renewable energy portfolio while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
