Coal Creek is a steam turbine power plant located in Underwood, North Dakota, within the Midwest Reliability Organization’s jurisdiction. With an operating capacity of 1142.2 MW, it plays a significant role in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator’s power control area. The plant is operated and majority-owned by Rainbow Gas Company, which also serves as its holding company. Utilizing coal as its primary fuel source, Coal Creek supplies electricity primarily to Great River Energy. The plant operates in an unregulated environment, allowing for flexible operational strategies.
