The inspectors had warned for months that the construction crew was digging the pipeline into unstable ground and had been working on the project for months. The incident occurred when a muddy hillside gave way and severed the pipe, leading to a fire that engulfed the gas inside. The family escaped with just clothes and one of their dogs, but their pets, several cats, died in the fire.
