New York state has announced the largest state investment in renewable energy in U.S. history with 6.2 GW of projects, including three offshore wind and 22 land-based renewable energy projects. The projects are expected to deliver enough clean energy to power 2.6 million homes and provide approximately 12% of the state’s electricity needs. The largest project will be the 401.6 MW Mineral Basin Solar facility, built by Swift Current Energy, while the next largest is the 200 MW Hemlock Ridge Solar project by AES. The announcement also includes over $3.5 billion in commitments to disadvantaged communities. The clean energy generated by these projects is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 9.4 million metric tons annually, or the equivalent of taking over 2 million cars off the road every year.
