IRS Offers Tax Incentives for Energy Projects in Transitioning Communities as DOE Announces $22 Million Funding Initiative

The US IRS has updated guidance on energy communities, offering tax adders for projects within brownfield, coal, and other communities that will face challenges in the transition away from fossil fuels. The Department of Energy has announced up to $22 million in funds under its Renewable Energy Siting through Technical Engagement and Planning (R-STEP) program. Consumers Energy is developing a 250 MW solar project in Michigan, which will support its goal of adding 8 GW of solar by 2040. Duke Energy Progress is seeking approval for a 76-MW project in South Carolina, if approved, it will be sited adjacent to the Robinson Nuclear Plant. Wilson Chang, CEO of Sunrock Distributed Generation, shares his predictions for the changing energy landscape.
