Global Methane Emissions Surge 15-20% Despite International Pledges, Reaching 2.6 Times Pre-Industrial Levels.

Global methane emissions are increasing at a rapid rate, despite pledges from dozens of countries to reduce their output. The Global Carbon Project, a research organization tracking greenhouse gas emissions, has found that about two-thirds of these emissions are caused by human activity. The report also revealed that global concentrations are now 2.6 times higher than they were prior to the industrial era. Between 2018 and 2020, human-caused methane emissions likely exceed 400 million metric tons worldwide annually, a 15 to 20 percent increase from the period from 2000 to 2002. This is 15% higher than the period between 2000 and 2002.
