FuelCell Energy CEO Tony Leo, executive vice president and Chief Technology Officer with FuelCell Energy, has suggested that fuel cells are now poised to take off as a mainstream source of power due to increased focus on air quality and climate change awareness. Fuel cells are a device that produces electricity from electrochemical reactions between hydrogen and oxygen, rather than burning the fuel to create heat, which can also be used to produce hot water or steam or to drive chilling operations. The modular design of fuel cell plants allows them to scale up to a specific site’s energy needs. While fuel cells produce electricity, they also produce heat that can be used for heating or cooling operations. They are quiet compared to traditional power generation and do not require a lot of maintenance or large operations staff due to their unmanned nature.
