Exxon Mobil has ended its membership with the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), a trade group known for opposing government efforts to rein in the oil industry, due to a disagreement over climate policy. The company announced its split with IPAA in a 2022 climate lobbying review, which hasn’t been previously reported. Exxon claimed IPAA does not have any climate-related policy principles, supported emission-reduction policies, and advocated against strong methane regulations. Despite this, Exxon has remained a member of groups affiliated with IP AA, indicating that the company hasn’t fully stopped underwriting opposition to climate action. Despite the company’s withdrawal, it continues to back 11 state or regional oil groups described as “cooperating associations”.
