In 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is facing a period of uncertainty as it aims to implement far-reaching regulations and distribute billions of dollars across the country. The agency needs to quickly cement protections on air, climate, and water to avoid rules being buried by a Republican-led Congress and White House in 2025 if the coming elections turn against Democrats. It will also have to implement President Joe Biden’s trademark climate and infrastructure laws, establish new programs and bring on fresh staff to manage historic funding flowing through EPA. Former EPA Administrator William Reilly described the agency’s situation as “one of maximum urgency and de facto risk” considering the uncertain politics it faces. The EPA has also been transformed into a major funding hub under the Biden administration, receiving over $100 billion in additional spending over the coming years from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act combined.
