The EPA’s internal watchdog, Inspector General Sean O’Donnell, has warned of the danger of fraud and waste as the agency receives billions in taxpayer dollars while its limited budget is underfunded. This comes as EPA will receive over $100 billion under President Joe Biden’s signature climate and infrastructure laws, which will significantly increase the agency’s workload and staff. However, the watchdog office is struggling to keep up with the influx, exacerbated by the Inflation Reduction Act giving zero funding to the inspector general for oversight, compared to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act giving nearly $270 million. O’Donnell highlighted these concerns in his latest semiannual report.
