The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a warning that slipshod oversight could jeopardize the agency’s ability to ensure new wood stoves comply with emission limits for a potentially deadly pollutant. The watchdog, known as EPA Inspector General Sean O’Donnell, has found that labs approved by EPA for compliance tests for new models are not necessarily following the rules, which are supposed to be certified by an independent third party. This issue was found in one instance where a lab was serving as its own certifier, undermining the requirement. Despite this, EPA did not revoke the lab’s certificate of compliance after complaints from rival manufacturers.
