The Biden administration credits last year’s relatively calm year for wildfires in the US for helping federal agencies prepare for future wildfires. In a May 20 memo to agencies with wildfire responsibilities, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland stated their departments reduced record levels of potential wildfire fuel on federal forests in 2023. This is in response to criticism from Republicans in Congress. The agencies plan to use over 17,000 wildfire personnel in 2024.
