Xcel Energy to Install 600MW Storage, Expand Nuclear Plants, Aiming for 100% Clean Electricity by 2040.

Xcel Energy is aiming to install 600MW of energy storage in the Midwest US, with the extension of work at its two nuclear plants in Minnesota. The use of renewable power, BESS and nuclear will enable Xcel to contribute to Minnesota’s plans to meet 100% of its energy demand with “clean electricity” by 2040. Despite some criticism, Xcel’s leadership is optimistic about the company’s direction amid the Minnesota energy transition. The company is also investing in non-lithium long-duration energy storage technologies, deploying two 100-hour duration 1GWh projects using Form Energy and Ambri’s liquid metal batteries. The 9th annual Energy Storage Summit EU will be held in London, 20-21 February 2024.
