WPI Researchers Develop Material to Convert Urea in Water into Hydrogen, Paving Way for Sustainable Energy Solutions.

Researchers from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) have developed a material that could remove urea from water and convert it into hydrogen gas. The material is composed of nickel and cobalt atoms with tailored electronic structures, allowing transition metal oxides and hydroxides to selectively oxidize urea in an electrochemical reaction. This breakthrough offers a solution to the environmental challenges caused by urea being present in water and its potential for hydrogen production. The development of electrocatalysts using these unique electronic structures led to enhanced electrochemical activity and selectivity for urea oxidation. The potential to efficiently produce hydrogen fuel from waste streams is a transformative outcome.
