Australian energy company Woodside Energy has secured social impact assessment approval for the $7.2bn Trion oil and gas project in Mexican waters. The approval was provided by the Mexican Ministry for Energy and will be used as a key tool in managing the project throughout the construction phase. The social impact assessments, submitted in May 2023, provides a comprehensive evaluation of the offshore oil and natural gas project and outlines Woodside’s strategies for mitigating social impacts. The project is being developed in a joint venture with PEMEX Exploración y Producción, with a 60% stake of the field operator holding the remaining 40% ownership. The first oil is expected to be drawn in 2028.
