University of Waterloo researchers have developed a groundbreaking approach to bolster electricity grids using fuel cell-powered vehicles in an effort to stabilize Alberta’s power grid, which is experiencing high demand and high carbon emissions. The researchers propose a solution involves incentivizing fuel cell trucks to rest during peak hours, using their idle time to refuel hydrogen refueling stations or pipelines, which would then use their fuel cells as mobile generators. This approach reduces energy consumption during peak periods and provides an eco-friendly method of energy storage. The research is supported by the Transition Accelerator, Mitacs, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The researchers plan to test their findings in both laboratory and real-world settings.
