A senior State Department official, Geoffrey Pyatt, has warned that the United States must act swiftly to prevent China from dominating key sectors such as hydrogen and wind power in the energy transition supply chain, including those in the hydrogen industry. Pyatt cited China’s near-monopoly in solar wafers and solar cells as an example, which has hampered the growth of domestic solar manufacturing in the U.S. as a cautionary tale to avoid similar dominance in other clean energy sectors. Despite efforts to bolster the clean energy sector, challenges remain such as new nuclear power development and the reliance on China and African countries for essential minerals used in renewable energy technologies. However, Pyatt sees promise and optimism in the US’ ability to compete and lead in the global energy transition.
