U.S. Pushes Clean Hydrogen Investment: Exploring Grey, Blue, and Green Production Methods for Sustainable Energy Future.

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which includes financial incentives to encourage investment in clean hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, has sparked significant discussion about the production and deployment of hydrogen. The author outlines the differences between three types of hydrogen production methods: grey, blue, and green. Grey hydrogen is produced through a steam-methane reforming (SMR) process that uses natural gas, but also releases carbon dioxide, which is released as an emission. Blue hydrogen is more contained and uses natural gases to capture and sequester carbon emissions. However, this method is ineffective if used long-term sustainable solution for energy sector. Green hydrogen is considered the cleanest and environmentally sustainable solution, as it is carbon-free and uses renewable sources to power an electrolyzer without the use of methane. The U.S. government is working to incentivize these hydrogen initiatives and encourage industry adoption rates and the adoption rates associated with them.
