U.S. Increases Tariffs on Chinese Solar Cells and Battery Imports, Aiming to Protect Domestic Industry and Prices.

The United States has imposed tariffs on hardware imported from China, with the Solar Module business seeing these measures as a warning shot rather than a severe penalty. The tariff rate on solar cells will increase from 25% to 50% in 2024, and this will protect against China’s policy-driven overcapacity that depresses prices and inhibits the development of solar capacity outside of China. The administration has also increased import tariffs on battery cells from China used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. However, these tariffs are likely to have a limited impact on the overall U.S. solar industry as importers have already diversified their supply chains away from Chinese manufacturers. Trade regulation uncertainties are also complicating the financial landscape for solar panels and other solar products.
