Toyota Shifts Focus to Heavy Vehicles, Aiming to Overcome Hydrogen Market Challenges and Compete with BEVs.

Toyota is shifting its strategy towards heavy vehicles, following its unsuccessful attempt into the passenger car hydrogen market with the Toyota Mirai. The move is aimed at addressing the shortage of public hydrogen refueling stations and competition from battery electric vehicles (BEVs). This shift aligns with the idea of addressing the “captive” fleet market where a dedicated refueling infrastructure is more accessible. Despite the challenges faced with the Mirai, Toyota remains committed to its hydrogen technology. The company is also working to address key issues such as the cost of hydrogen fuel cells, including reducing the size of the battery and tanks, making hydrogen more competitive and versatile.
