Solar Energy Emerges as Vital Resource for Disaster Response and Humanitarian Aid in Crisis Situations.

Solar energy is becoming a crucial tool in emergency response to disasters such as earthquakes, extreme weather, or sudden refugee crises. Non-profits and private companies are using solar energy to provide power to areas in desperate need of power. US-based non-profit Empowered by Light, which was founded in 2011, began providing solar to remote schools in Zambia and has completed over 80 solar and energy storage projects in nine countries. The charity has installed solar arrays on 11 Puerto Rican fire stations and provided support to communities on Maui, Hawaii, following the outbreak of wildfires on the U.S. island in early 2023. The organization also uses “powerfield buckets” to power aid distribution sites.
