Senate Democrats Call for Elimination of Fast-Track Permitting System for Oil and Gas Pipelines Amid Environmental Concerns

Senate Democrats are urging the Army Corps of Engineers to eliminate a permitting system used to fast-track oil and gas pipelines. The current system, Nationwide Permit 12, allows pipeline companies to cross waterways or dredge and fill wetlands if their projects are deemed to have minimal environmental impacts. However, the application has been far too broad, according to a letter signed by Sens. Jeff Merkley, Sheldon Whitehouse, Cory Booker, Ed Markey, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders.
