Senate Chair Ben Cardin Urges Azerbaijan to Release Political Prisoners Ahead of COP29 Climate Summit in Baku.

Senate Foreign Relations Chair Ben Cardin of Maryland, has called on Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and his government to release political prisoners before the upcoming U.N. climate summit, COP29, in Baku, which will begin in November, is not for the country’s defense of fossil fuels. Cardin, who has led congressional delegations to previous COPs, stated that hosting a major international conference like COP29 should include a commitment to allow frank discussion of information and issues and requires respect for freedom of speech and assembly. He also suggested that Azerbaijan should release political prisoner activists who protested against poor labor practices and harmful environmental impacts of the Chovdar gold mine operation.
