Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has written to the Environmental Law Institute (ELI), a legal education group criticized by oil and gas industry allies for providing courses on climate science to judges. Cruz alleges that ELI’s goal may be to influence judges to side with plaintiffs in climate change cases. This comes amid an increase in cases against the fossil fuel industry brought by over two dozen local governments, seeking to hold them accountable for climate change. Chicago recently became the latest municipality to accuse six oil companies and an influential industry ally of misleading the public about the dangers of burning fossil fuels.
