The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) has published a report titled “Energizing American Battery Storage Manufacturing” highlighting the potential for domestic battery manufacturing in the United States. The report notes that credits offered through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) have encouraged adoption of electric vehicles, energy storage, and other forms of electrification. While domestic battery manufacturers are in its early stages, the report suggests that demand for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the U.S. is likely to increase over six-fold from 18 GWh to 119 GWh by 2030. The SEIA predicts that announced manufacturing facilities could increase domestic capacity to over 630 GWh over the next five years. However, much of this supply may be directed towards meeting demand of EV manufacturers, rather than non-vehicle applications. The majority of batteries manufactured in the US are lithium, which are often sourced from outside the US.
