California utility SDG&E has brought in 180MWh of community-resiliency microgrids, which can provide energy security and reliability in communities across the state. The batteries are being deployed at a different utility substation each time each time, with each installation serving communities in Clairemont, Tierra Santa, Paradise, and Boulevard. The microgrils were developed following an August 2021 Emergency Proclamation issued by California governor Gavin Newsom as the state faced imminent heatwaves. The new microgrid systems use lithium iron phosphate battery cells and have enhanced safety and fire prevention features. They can be remotely operated by SDG &E or function as independent and islanded energy systems or remain connected to the grid. The US government announced its largest-ever investment in the grid last October, pledging US$10.5 billion towards projects that include 400 separate microgridges and 35GW of new renewable energy.
