Scientists uncover vast hydrogen reserves, potentially revolutionizing energy sector and sparking a new industrial gold rush.

Scientists have discovered that the planet contains an enormous reservoir of hydrogen gas, a fuel source long overlooked due to its elusive nature. A study by the US Geological Survey suggests that as much as 5 trillion tonnes of hydrogen could be stored in these underground reserves. The discovery could spark a revolution akin to the historical gold rushes that transformed societies. Interest in hydrogen as a fuel and industrial cornerstone has been driven by types labelled ‘blue’ and ‘grey hydrogen, which are produced through chemical restructuring of methane-based gas and become ‘blue’, when emissions are under control. However, these types of hydrogen cannot match the purity and cost-effectiveness of naturally occurring variety. Start-ups like Koloma, infused with $91 million investment from Bill Gates’s Breakthrough Energy Ventures, are betting big on this nascent energy promise.
