The trend of retrofitting energy management systems (EMS) systems is increasing due to economic and operational issues, with around 20% of Fractal EMS’s deal flow being impacted by retrofits. The EMS is often more difficult than solar SCADA due to its higher cost and larger size than SCADA. Factors such as underperformance or non-working EMS include CAPEX, annual software license costs less than 1% of annual revenue, failure to meet recommendations of NERC CIP, NIST 800 and ISO 27001, and inadequate integration with the owner’s SCADA or EMS. Cybersecurity concerns, including inadequate on-site controls and servers, lack of fire system integration, and insolvent or a company no longer supports the EMS. The process and timeline to retrofit an EMS can be completed within two weeks.
