The Republican Party has chosen Michael Whatley, a former oil and natural gas lobbyist, as its new national chair ahead of November’s presidential election. He replaces Ronna McDaniel, who had been chair since 2017. The pick was made official at a meeting with the Republican National Committee. Former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, reportedly endorsed Whatley to replace McDaniel. Whatley is currently the chair of the North Carolina Republican Party. He represented and was executive vice president of the Consumer Energy Alliance from 2008 to 2019, and lobbied for Noble Energy, BP, and the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association.
