Republican-led states sue Interior Department to block new methane regulations for fossil fuel drilling on public lands.

North Dakota and three other Republican-led states are suing the Interior Department to block a rule that revamps methane regulations for fossil fuel drilling on public lands. The complaint alleges that the Bureau of Land Management is attempting to improperly step into EPA’s shoes by finalizing “sweeping greenhouse gas emission controls” after a federal judge blocked an Obama-era version of the rule in 2020. The states argue that little has been done to change the Rule since its last vacated, and that it is more unlawful than its predecessor.
