A report by the EFI Foundation has warned that the country’s electricity demand will increase significantly in the next few years, jeopardizing efforts to transition to a carbon-free grid. The report, sponsored by energy companies, found that new natural gas plants may be necessary to meet growing demand and provide reliable power, which could conflict with decarbonization goals. The EFI foundation, led by former Obama-era Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, also found that natural gas partially fills the gap due to its reliability and affordability, but does not provide emissions reduction benefits of emerging clean energy technologies. This comes after a study found that utilities could likely meet demand with renewable electricity and energy efficiency gains, leaving newly built gas plants to become “stranded assets.
