Report reveals natural gas certification misleads consumers; senators urge FTC to investigate industry’s climate claims.

A report by climate groups Oil Change International and Earthworks has found that natural gas producers are using a “certified” or “responsible” label to convince customers they are a climate-friendly choice. However, the report alleges that gas certification is not yet regulated and its monitoring systems often miss methane leaks. Gas producers have begun working with third-party contractors to monitor their gas extraction processes for leaks and “certify” those with lower methane emissions. A third party gas certifier disputed these findings, but Democratic U.S. senators have called for the Federal Trade Commission to crack down on the industry’s claims. The report also highlights the need for a more thorough transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
