PPL Corporation Receives $72 Million for Carbon Capture Project at Kentucky Natural Gas Facility

PPL Corporation has secured a $72 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) for a carbon capture research and development project at its natural gas combined-cycle (NGCC) facility in Louisville, Kentucky. The project, developed in partnership with the University of Kentucky and others, will cost PPL subsidiaries Kentucky Utilities and Louisville Gas and Electric Company more than $100 million. The first tranche of funding will be used to begin Phase 1 activities at the Cane Run generating station. The system is designed to capture more than 95% of the carbon emissions from up to 20 megawatts (MW) of the plant’s 691 MW generating capacity, or up to 67,000 metric tons of CO₂ per year.
