PowerSouth and Mitsubishi Power Launch 693MW Lowman Energy Center, Transitioning to Cleaner Energy in Alabama.

PowerSouth Energy Cooperative and Mitsubishi Power have begun operations at the new 693MW Lowman Energy Center (LEC) in Leroy, Alabama. The LEC, which will provide clean electricity to PowerSouth’s distribution members in Alabama and Northwest Florida once fully operational, will replace the 556MW Charles R Lowman coal-fired power plant. The plant will feature Mitsubish Power’s advanced M501JAC gas turbine, which is capable of producing enough energy to supply 300,000 homes annually. The M501AC is said to deliver superior operability, reducing start-up time and enabling long-term performance. PowerSouth president and CEO Gary Smith said the LEC offers 693 megawatts of reliable, around-the-clock power that will meet the needs of their distribution members for decades.
