PG&E Implements Innovative Technologies to Significantly Reduce Wildfire Risk and Enhance Grid Resilience in California.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E) is using innovative and emerging technologies to reduce wildfire risk. These include a remotely operated controlled-burn system, next-generation drones, and wireless remote grids. The utility has previously reduced wildfire risk by 94% based on established methodologies. PG&E is exploring moving overhead power lines to ground level to reduce ignition risk and enhance grid resilience. The company also tested BurnBot, an alternative to traditional land management techniques, to clear vegetation and explore potential environmental and safety benefits. The first-in-the-world installation and energization of a GLDS circuit in San Mateo County, California, in 2023 could provide a risk reduction comparable to undergrounding.
