Rivian’s first electric SUV, the R1S, has been debuted by the Palo Alto police department as the patrol-ready R1C, an electric SUV that can reach 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds and has a 410 miles range, 850 horsepower, and enough room to fit seven passengers comfortably. The R1D, which also has more interior space than a Ford Explorer, will soon be patrolling the streets of Palo Alto. Palo Alto Mayor Ed Lauing praised Rivian for its “relentless technical innovation” and compared it to the city’s existing infrastructure. The decision to partner with Rivian was made weeks before the Trump administration’s White House ad at the White House was released, and is expected to be shared by other departments across the US soon.
