Oil Giants Lobby for Broader Hydrogen Tax Credits, Sparking Concerns Over Environmental Impact and Decarbonization Efforts.

Major oil and gas companies, including ExxonMobil and BP, are lobbying for a broad interpretation of hydrogen tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), under the 45V tax credit established by the IRA to incentivize hydrogen production from renewable sources. The Treasury Department and IRS suggest that the highest credits should be given to hydrogen produced using renewable energy like wind and solar, aligns with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, fossil fuel companies, like ExxonMobil, BP, and ExxonMobil are pushing for a “technology-neutral” approach, which would allow hydrogen produced from natural gas, “blue hydrogen,” which is produced using carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, to qualify for the same credits. The push for broad hydrogen tax credit aims to leverage existing infrastructure and maximize profits, but poses significant environmental risks due to its reliance on unproven CCS technology and its inefficacies. The finalization of the 45 V tax credit parameters could significantly impact the hydrogen market’s trajectory, potentially accelerating the shift towards renewable energy sources and potentially undermining global decarbonization efforts.
