NYISO Extends Operation of Four Power Plants to Address NYC’s Projected Electric Reliability Deficit by 2025.

The New York Independent System Operator (NYIS) will keep four plants operating past their expected retirement date in order to maintain an adequate electric reliability margin in the nation’s most populous city. The ISO concluded in July that New York City will face a 446 MW deficit in its reliability margin beginning in 2025 due to rising demand and new emission limits on plants. Generators on the 2 & 3 and Narrows 1 & 2 barges will act as a temporary solution and will run for an additional two years. A coalition of consumer and environmental justice advocates has urged the ISO, city, state, and utility companies to develop solutions to reduce the need for the power supply. However, Consolidated Edison, which provides electricity to NYC, said it was unable to develop a solution in time.
