NRG Energy has replaced its CEO, Mauricio Gutierrez, with Dr. Lawrence Coben as its interim president and CEO, and appointed four new independent directors to its board. The move was influenced by activist investor firm Elliott Investment Management. The company is currently searching for a permanent CEO and has appointed a search firm to assist with this process. The appointments were part of a collaboration with Elliott, who also identified Marwan Fawaz, Kevin Howell, Alex Pourbaix, and Marcie Zlotnik as independent directors. The changes follow repeated calls from Elliott for a new CEO and “enhancements” to the board. In May, Elliott notified NRG it had spent $1 billion and claimed to hold a 13% “economic interest” in NRG.
