Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) has reported that the National Park Service (NPS) law enforcement staffing has decreased by nearly half since 2010, reaching a “generational low” according to the group’s data obtained via the Freedom of Information Act. This has left park resources vulnerable and raises concerns about visitor safety amid increasing park attendance. The House recently approved a budget cut for the NPS in the fiscal 2025 spending package, which could result in the loss of 1,000 park staff, including law enforcement. The group warns that the Park Service’s ranger force is in a “disperforming condition and getting worse” as the House approves a budget package that could significantly reduce the NSP budget.
